New East Oakland Sports Center opens to the public

on July 1, 2011

Oakland’s newest sports facility, the East Oakland Sports Center, opened its door to the public on Thursday afternoon.

The 25,000-square-foot facility, located at 9161 Edes Avenue, includes an aquatic center, a fitness room and a dance studio. The center is also surrounded by outdoor tennis courts and baseball fields, making it a “destination venue for Oakland residents,” said Dana Riley, assistant to the director of the Parks and Recreation Office, which supervises the center.

The project, which cost $25 million, is mainly funded by Measure DD (Oakland Trust for Clean Water & Safe Parks) and Measure WW (East Bay Regional Parks funds). However, the center still needs funds for equipment for the 3,600-square-foot fitness room.

Future unfunded phases of the center, according to the Parks and Recreation office, would include an outdoor swimming pool, a two-court basketball gym as well as three outside soccer fields.

    Looks awesome, but I can’t find any information about hours, etc. Love to find out when I can take the kids to that great-looking pool, but the center doesn’t appear to be on OaklandNet yet, nor is there a phone number listed. How can I get more information???

      Hi Anne, the hours is 1-6pm from Monday to Thursday, 2-7pm on Friday, 2-6:30pm on Saturday and 2-5:30 on Sunday. For more information please call 5106155838.

    The pool is great! the kids love going there. And it feels good having all the life guards making sure it’s safe!
