The Oakland Athletics and their fan base took to Jack London Square on January 28 to celebrate the beginning of the upcoming 2017 baseball campaign. It was the first time in nearly two decades that the A’s held their annual festival in Jack London Square, the potential home of a new A’s stadium.
Someone snapped a photo of the Castlemont team kneeling, and it quickly spread on Instagram and Twitter. At the next game against The King’s Academy in Sunnyvale, Castlemont’s players took their protest one step further: they laid down on the ground as if they were dead and raised their arms in the “don’t shoot” position. On October 8, California Canoe & Kayak hosted their 14th annual Support Strokes event in hopes of raising $15000 for the Charlotte Maxwell Clinic. The funds raised at will allow the clinic to continue to provide free cancer care services to low income women in Oakland.

On April 17, the Oakland Ballet Company will be hosting the second annual East Bay Dances Showcase. This showcase is meant to highlight the diversity of artistry and dance in the East Bay.
